How I Discovered My Passion for Technology

JourneyLearningDevelopment

A wise man once said, "Your passion is not something you find; it's something you uncover within yourself by chasing what makes your soul come alive."

Well, if that's true, then it's safe to say I uncovered my passion multiple times throughout my bachelor's studies. This led me to gain substantial experience through numerous internships, projects, and club work. Each new challenge and curiosity led me to dive deeper, turning fleeting interests into lasting expertise. I not only honed my technical skills but also developed a deep appreciation for how technology drives modern businesses forward.

How It All Began

I am not sure if this comes across as cliché, but my mother has been a profound influence in my life, exemplifying hard work, dedication, and perseverance. Despite numerous challenges, she qualified as a Chartered Accountant to support our family. Her sacrifices taught me the importance of focus, independence, and the value of education.

"I stepped into my first year of college on November 21, 2022, with my inaugural class: Introduction to Programming in C."

Initially, I wanted to stay ahead of the instructor just to better understand the course material. To achieve this, I watched tutorials and practiced problems every single day. I fell in love with the journey and the progress I was making. I accelerated my learning and finished the entire syllabus in just two weeks.

The Python Phase

After that, I started learning Python by making games and automating boring processes. This aided me in understanding Python as a language and also laid the foundation to start my journey in deep learning. I then gradually shifted my focus to understand the mathematics behind them.

This was fun until I built something interesting but I couldn't show it to anyone as I could only interact with it through a terminal. I needed a way to bring my ideas to people.

Enter Web Development

That's how I got into Web development. I dedicated countless hours to mastering the fundamentals of frontend development. I refined my skills to the point where translating ideas into elegant websites became second nature.

Later, I explored Backend and DevOps, where I enjoyed system design, building cloud architectures, and optimizing backend systems to scale applications efficiently. What started as a necessity quickly became another passion.

The IIT Hyderabad Experience

I must say it was at IITH I realized the true potential of technology. I became actively involved in several technological clubs and contributed to a variety of projects. I wanted to get a taste of IoT development so I worked hands-on with Arduino, microcontrollers, and various sensors.

Notably, I worked on cool hardware projects involving gestures to communicate wirelessly with various devices:

  • A gesture-controlled car
  • AI-powered gesture recognition system utilizing motion sensors, capturing and analyzing data from a Google Wear OS wristwatch in real-time
  • IoT-based fall detection using a NodeMCU, MPU6050 sensor, Flutter, and WebSockets

Key Takeaways

  • Consistency wins: Daily practice for two weeks beat months of casual learning
  • Build to learn: Projects teach more than tutorials ever will
  • Follow curiosity: Each "why?" led to a new skill domain
  • Environment matters: Being at IITH surrounded by builders accelerated growth

This journey of discovering passion through action continues to shape how I approach new challenges today. The key was never waiting for passion to find me—it was actively creating opportunities to uncover it.
